About 401(k) Plans
A 401(k) is a tax-advantaged retirement savings plan offered by employers. Contributions are invested and grow over time, helping you build a retirement nest egg.
Traditional vs Roth 401(k)
- Traditional 401(k): Contributions are made pre-tax, reducing your taxable income now. Withdrawals in retirement are taxed as ordinary income.
- Roth 401(k): Contributions are made with after-tax dollars. Both contributions and earnings grow tax-free, and qualified withdrawals in retirement are tax-free.
2024 Contribution Limits
- Employee contribution limit: $23,000 (under age 50)
- Catch-up contribution: Additional $7,500 (age 50+), for a total of $30,500
- Total (employee + employer): $69,000 (under 50) / $76,500 (50+)
Employer Match
Many employers match a percentage of your contributions. For example, a common match is 50% of contributions up to 6% of salary. Always contribute enough to get the full employer match — it's free money!
Early Withdrawal Penalties
Withdrawals before age 59½ generally incur a 10% penalty plus income tax (Traditional) or are limited to contributions only (Roth). Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) begin at age 73.
