Body Fat Calculator Guide: The Navy Tape-Measure Method

Body fat percentage is a far better measure of fitness than BMI — it distinguishes muscle from fat and tracks real progress when the scale won't budge. While DEXA scans and hydrostatic weighing are most accurate, the US Navy's tape-measure method comes remarkably close using just a $2 tape measure. This guide explains the formula and how to take the measurements.

The formula differs for men and women, using different circumference measurements.

%BF (men) = 86.010 × log₁₀(abdomen − neck) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76
%BF (women) = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log₁₀(height) − 78.387
  • All measurements in centimeters
  • abdomen/waist — at the navel, relaxed
  • neck — below the larynx
  • hip — widest point (women only)

The logarithm captures how fat mass scales with circumference differences.

Women naturally carry more essential fat (for reproductive health), so the same fitness level looks different on the scale.

Taking Accurate Measurements

💡 Good to know

The Navy method has a ~3–4% margin of error vs. DEXA. That's fine for tracking trends — if your number drops from 22% to 18% over 3 months, you've genuinely lost fat, even if the absolute value is slightly off.

Why Body Fat Beats BMI

BMI can't tell muscle from fat. A bodybuilder at 5'10", 220 lb has a BMI of 31.6 ("obese") but might have 12% body fat (elite athlete). Body fat percentage is the metric that actually reflects fitness.

Put It Into Practice

Enter your measurements in either metric or imperial to see your body fat percentage, category, and lean mass.
