Your electricity bill is priced in kilowatt-hours (kWh), but every device in your home is labeled in watts. That gap between "what the device says" and "what the bill charges" is where most people lose the thread. This guide connects the two with one formula, shows how tiered rates change the math, and reveals the phantom load quietly draining your wallet.
Watts vs. Kilowatt-Hours
A watt (W) is a rate of power — how fast a device drinks electricity right now. A kilowatt-hour is an amount of energy — one kilowatt (1,000 W) running for one hour. Your bill charges for the amount, not the rate.
The bridge is time. To turn watts into the kWh your utility bills, you multiply by hours and divide by 1,000:
- Watts — the device's power rating (check the label)
- Hours — how long it runs
A 100 W bulb left on for 10 hours uses 100 ÷ 1,000 × 10 = 1 kWh.
The Cost Formula
Once you have kWh, the dollar cost is just kWh times your rate. For a device running every day over a month:
- Days — usually 30 to estimate a month
- $/kWh — your utility rate (find it on the bill; US averages around $0.17, but it ranges from $0.11 to $0.40+)
Walk through a real example. A 1,500 W space heater runs 6 hours/day for 30 days at $0.17/kWh:
Cost = (1,500 ÷ 1,000) × 6 × 30 × 0.17 = 1.5 × 6 × 30 × 0.17 ≈ $45.90/month
A single space heater can add $550/year to your bill. Multiply that by a few always-on devices and you see why the number surprises people.
Tiered and Time-of-Use Rates
Not every kWh costs the same. Two common structures change the formula:
- Tiered rates — the first block of kWh each month is cheap, the next block costs more. Your marginal kWh (the last one you used) is the expensive one, so high-consumption months cost disproportionately more.
- Time-of-Use (TOU) — electricity is cheaper off-peak (nights, weekends) and pricier at peak (hot afternoons). Running the dishwasher at 9 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. can cut that load's rate in half.
With TOU, split the hours in the cost formula by rate: Cost = Σ (Watts ÷ 1,000 × Hours_in_tier × Rate_tier).
Don't guess. Take last month's total dollars charged and divide by total kWh consumed — that blended rate already folds in fees, taxes, and tiers, and it's the number to plug into the calculator.
The Phantom Load
Many devices draw power even when "off" — TVs on standby, chargers, cable boxes, coffee makers with clocks. Individually tiny (1–25 W), but always on, 24/7. A 10 W phantom load costs:
(10 ÷ 1,000) × 24 × 365 × 0.17 ≈ $14.90/year — per device.
Ten such devices = $150/year of nothing. A power strip with a switch kills them all at once.
