Scientific Calculator Guide: Order of Operations & Functions
A scientific calculator does more than add and multiply — it evaluates expressions containing parentheses, exponents, trigonometric and logarithmic functions, and scientific notation. Understanding how it interprets your input is the key to getting correct answers.
The Order of Operations (PEMDAS)
Functions like sin, cos, log are evaluated at the exponent stage (before multiplication).
Example: 2 + 3 × 4² is evaluated as 2 + (3 × (4²)) = 2 + (3 × 16) = 2 + 48 = 50, not 50 (from (2+3)×4²=80). When in doubt, use parentheses to make the order explicit.
Trigonometric & Logarithmic Functions
- Trig — sin, cos, tan (and their inverses asin, acos, atan). Toggle between degrees and radians.
- Logarithms — log (base 10) and ln (natural log, base e).
- Powers & roots — x², x³, xʸ, √, ʸ√x.
- Constants — π (3.14159…) and e (2.71828…).
The most common scientific-calculator mistake. If your trig answer is wildly off, check whether you're in degree or radian mode. sin(30°) = 0.5, but sin(30 rad) ≈ −0.988.
Scientific Notation
For very large or very small numbers, use the E or EE key: 6.022E23 means 6.022 × 10²³ (Avogadro's number). The calculator handles the exponent arithmetic automatically.
