Square footage is the language of every home project — flooring, painting, roofing, tiling, even rent. It looks trivial (multiply two numbers) until the room is L-shaped, has a closet, or you need to convert to metric for materials ordered overseas. This guide covers the core formula, how to break weird shapes into rectangles, and the conversion that saves a costly mistake.
The Basic Formula
For any rectangular space, area is length times width:
- Length and Width — measured in the same unit (feet)
A 12 ft × 10 ft room = 120 sq ft.
Measure wall to wall at the floor, ignoring furniture. If your tape reads in inches, divide by 12 first (e.g. 144 in = 12 ft).
L-Shaped and Multi-Room Spaces
Real rooms aren't rectangles. The trick: split the space into rectangles, compute each, and add them up. An L-shaped room is just two overlapping rectangles minus the overlap — or, more simply, two separate rectangles you sum.
Where each A = length × width of one rectangular piece.
Example: an L-shaped living room where the main area is 15 ft × 12 ft (180 sq ft) and the nook is 8 ft × 6 ft (48 sq ft):
Total = 180 + 48 = 228 sq ft
For an entire home, just sum every room. That's exactly what the calculator does when you add multiple regions — name them (bedroom, kitchen) so the running total stays readable.
Don't Forget Waste and Waste Factor
When buying materials, the raw square footage is rarely what you order:
- Flooring & tile — add 5–10% for cuts, mistakes, and future repairs. A 200 sq ft room often needs 220 sq ft of planks.
- Paint — a gallon covers ~350–400 sq ft per coat; divide wall area by that, then multiply by coats.
- Wall area — for painting, use height × perimeter, then subtract doors and windows.
Flooring uses floor area; painting and wallpaper use wall area (height × perimeter). They're different numbers — mixing them up is the classic "I bought too little" error.

Ordering materials internationally? One square foot equals 0.092903 square meters. The conversion is a simple multiply:
