Total Daily Energy Expenditure is what you actually burn across a real day — eating, moving, fidgeting, digesting, and just being alive. Every successful diet, every successful bulk, every realistic calorie target is built on TDEE. This guide breaks down the four components, how they're estimated, and how to translate TDEE into actionable calorie targets.

What Is TDEE?

TDEE is your body's total calorie burn over 24 hours — every joule spent on every physiological process. It includes:

NEAT is the most variable piece. Two people with identical BMRs and identical workout routines can have TDEEs differing by 400+ calories based on how much they fidget, pace, take the stairs, and tap their feet.

The TDEE Formula

There's no single closed-form equation for TDEE — it depends on BMR plus an activity multiplier. The standard approach:

TDEE = BMR × Activity Multiplier
  • 1.2 — sedentary (desk job, no exercise)
  • 1.375 — lightly active (light exercise 1–3 days/week)
  • 1.55 — moderately active (moderate exercise 3–5 days/week)
  • 1.725 — very active (heavy exercise 6–7 days/week)
  • 1.9 — athlete (physical job + 2× daily training)

The multipliers already fold in NEAT, EAT, and TEF for the typical person in each category.

Example: a woman with BMR of 1,500 calories who is moderately active (1.55) burns 2,325 calories/day. To maintain weight, she eats 2,325. To lose weight, she eats 300–500 less; to gain, 300+ more.

Breaking Down the Components

For our example 2,325-calorie day, the breakdown looks like:

Notice: BMR + NEAT = 84% of TDEE. Formal exercise is a small slice. This is why losing weight by exercising alone is hard — a 30-minute run might burn 300 calories, but your body conserves by moving less the rest of the day.

Setting a Calorie Target

Once you know TDEE, setting a target is straightforward:

The 500-calorie rules assume ~3,500 calories per pound (or 7,700 per kg) of fat. Real-world weight is messier because water, glycogen, and muscle all fluctuate, but the rule of thumb is a reasonable starting point.

⚠️ Don't go too low

Eating more than 750 calories below TDEE causes rapid muscle loss, metabolic adaptation, and hormonal disruption (testosterone drops, cortisol rises). For sustainable fat loss, stick to 500-calorie deficits. Anything more aggressive should be medically supervised.

Why Tracking Matters (and Why It's Flawed)

TDEE estimates are accurate to roughly ±15% — a 2,300 estimate might really be anywhere from 1,955 to 2,645. That's why tracking your weight and adjusting is essential:

  1. Compute TDEE from the formula.
  2. Set a calorie target based on your goal (deficit, surplus, maintenance).
  3. Track your actual weight weekly for 3–4 weeks.
  4. If weight is changing faster or slower than expected, adjust by 100–200 calories.

This empirical loop is the only reliable way to find your true TDEE. Body composition monitors, calorie apps, and fitness trackers are inputs to the loop, not replacements for it.
